Understanding Natasha's Law: A Guide for Small Food Businesses

What is Natasha's Law?

Natasha's Law, officially known as the UK Food Information Amendment, came into effect on 1st October 2021. It was introduced following the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction after eating a baguette that contained sesame seeds but wasn't labelled as such.

The law requires all food businesses to provide full ingredient lists with allergens emphasised on pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) foods.

What is PPDS Food?

Pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) food is food that is:

  • Packaged at the same place it is sold
  • Packaged before a customer orders or selects it
  • In packaging that cannot be altered without opening or changing it
  • Common examples include sandwiches made and wrapped in a café, salads prepared in-store at a deli, or baked goods packaged on-site at a bakery.

    What Are the Requirements?

Under Natasha's Law, all PPDS food must display:

  • **The name of the food** - clearly identifying what it is
  • **A full ingredients list** - listing all ingredients in descending order by weight
  • **Allergens emphasised** - the 14 major allergens must be highlighted (usually in bold) within the ingredients list
  • The 14 Major Allergens

You must emphasise these allergens whenever they appear in your ingredients:

  • Celery
  • Cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats)
  • Crustaceans
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Lupin
  • Milk
  • Molluscs
  • Mustard
  • Nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Sesame
  • Soybeans
  • Sulphur dioxide (when concentration exceeds 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre)
